Shira Route (4 Days)

Day 1 – Londorosi Gate to Shira Camp

Leave the hotel early in the morning after breakfast and drive to Londorosi Gate (2300m) approximately 60km from Moshi town. The drive will take 2 hours to the gate where we will complete registration before proceeding on with the drive through the rain forest to Morum barrier at 2800m where we will begin our trek. We’ll walk for 3 to 4 hours to Shira camp at 3840m. On reaching on Morum barrier we will have already left the forest and now we will be in the heather and moorland zone. We will camp and overnight at Shira camp.

Day 2 – Shira Camp to Lava Tower Rock Camp

Duration 5-6hrs

After an early breakfast we will trek to Lava Tower Rock Campsite at 4600m. This will take 5 to 6 hours. The route is steep and rocky. The walk is approximately 10 kms. We will have an early dinner so that we can sleep early in order to have enough rest before being woken up at midnight to commence our trek to the summit.

Day 3 – Lava Tower Rock Camp to Uhuru Peak (Freedom Peak) to Mweka High Camp

Elevation 4600m to 5895m to 3572m
Duration 11 to 15hrs

We will wake up at around midnight to get prepared and start the trek to the roof of Africa up the steepest route, the Western Breach wall (Arrow Glacier). The first 9 hours walk takes us through scree and rocky outcrops before getting on to the glacier fields on the rim that takes us to the summit. We will spend some minutes enjoying the amazing views and taking photos. We will then start to descend to Barafu Camp at 4600m where we will rest for some minutes before proceeding to Mweka High Camp at 3572m. We will camp here overnight.

Day 4 – Mweka High Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation 3572 to 1850m
Duration 4-5 hrs

Our trek to the gate will start early in the morning. The walk will take us 4 hours and passes through Mweka Hut where the forest starts. After an hour of the walk we will leave the moorland that is rocky and get into the rain forest that will lead us to the Gate. At the gate we will be served hot lunch and you’ll receive your certificates. This is the point where you will say goodbye to your staff before we drive back to the hotel in Moshi. A warm shower will be waiting for you at the hotel and of course, dinner and a well deserved rest.
